Bird Walk at White Point Nature Center
American crow
Project Phoenix volunteers had a lovely morning of birding with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy at the White Point Nature Preserve!
PVPLC Board Member and Project Phoenix volunteer, Randy Harwood led the bird walk, accompanied by the amazing staff and interns from PVPLC. The preserve was a flurry of activity, with many birds flying between bushes, desert cottontail rabbits and squirrels running along the paths, and a variety of butterflies that darted between blooming flowers. The preserve hosts guided nature walks every third Saturday of the month, we highly recommend going if you can! The White Point Education Center is open Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and is a wonderful resource to learn about the species and conservation projects in the area.
Birders observed several species of birds common to the area, including Northern Mockingbirds, Lesser goldfinches, and House finches. The endangered California gnatcatcher was spotted inside the dense coastal sage scrub that lines the trails of the preserve. Birders also got to witness a mating pair of Red-tailed hawks soar together in wide circles and briefly clasping talons. For the eBird checklist from the event, please click here. Randy Harwood has generously provided his photos of each of the species we saw on the bird walk. These photos were not taken on the bird walk, but wonderfully highlight the birds that inhabit the Los Angeles area.
